A Star-Spangled Week 5 Wrap-UP

During last night’s Zoom discussion (which I was soooo encouraged by!) there was some talk about Jesus’s descriptions of the Kingdom of Heaven in both Matthew and Mark. It occurred to me as we’re rolling into 4th of July weekend that there is no Independence Day in God’s Kingdom. Tomorrow we dive into Galatians where we read in chapter 5, verse 1 that it is for freedom that Christ has set us free, “stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.” When Christ set us free from the law of sin and death, we weren’t released from our bondage to be our own masters as an autonomous, independent people. No, He bought us. We are His. He is our new Master and only in obedience to His commands can we find true freedom.

As you read Galatians look for some of the distinctions Paul makes between being a slave to Christ and a slave to sin. For example:

1:10 The slave of sin seeks the approval of man/ The servant of Christ tries to please God

2:4 The slave of sin spies out the freedom of others and tries to bring them back into slavery/ The slave to Christ does not “yield in submission even for a moment.”

2:12-14 The slave to sin acts hypocritically out of fear forcing others to do what they don’t even do/ The slave to Christ keeps in step with the truth of the gospel

2:16 The slave to sin seeks justification through works of the law/ The slave to Christ is justified by faith in Christ alone

3:10-14 The slave to sin is under a curse/ The slave to Christ is is redeemed from the curse by Christ becoming a curse for us so that we might be blessed

3:23-4:7 The slave to sin is held captive under the law/ The slave to Christ is a son and an heir

4:8,9 The slave to sin cannot know God/ The slave to Christ knows God and is known by Him

Sisters, there are more! You finish the list. And then as you celebrate our earthly kingdom’s Independence Day remember that “You were called to freedom… only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh” (5:13). Instead, “walk by the Spirit and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do. But if you are led by the Spirit you are not under the law” (5:16-18). You have been set free from the law of sin and death by Son Himself! And “if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed!” (John 8:36).

On that note, I wanted to share my son Titus’s rendition of The Star Spangled Banner. Click here to view his Youtube video. Then afterward please click here to watch the video he made giving you an opportunity to support his musical endeavors AND get his brand new CD! Happy 4th of July!
